Welcome to A Place 2 Fledge!

WHO WE ARE:

It couldn’t be simpler; we are a small dedicated group of volunteers who are crazy in love with birds. We started several years ago taking in a bird here or there who needed us. It all started with a little Honey. Our son went to a friend’s birthday party and came home with a bird, a Nanday Conure no less, we named her Honey. Honey became part of our family and everything our family does she does too.

We joined bird groups and lists to learn all we could about Honey and birds in general. We immersed ourselves in the bird community to become educated by watching, listening and most importantly by doing. We visited and volunteered our time in established Aviaries, and also for Avian Veterinarians.

Being members of the bird community we started to hear about other birds like Honey who just needed a second chance for a great life. We started accepting a bird here and a bird there. We learned most of what we know out of necessity, if a bird came to us with a broken leg we learned to set it. When one came to us missing a beak we learned to feed it, when they come to us angry and distrustful of humans we worked to regain and earn that trust. When they come with nutritional problems we get them back on track with a great diet and while we are feeding their tummies we try to feed their souls too.

WHAT WE DO:

We accept birds from families who are moving or being transferred and cannot take their birds with them. This is especially important in our area as we are surrounded by several military bases and when families are sent overseas they are often unable to take their birds overseas with them. We also take sick and injured birds and offer them vet care, medication, and TLC while they recuperate from illness and injuries in our quarantine room.

We take birds that have behavioral or social issues and work to help them become happy healthy well behaved flock members. When we feel we have done all we can for a bird in our care and he is ready for his permanent family we work very hard to find the perfect home and family. We offer new bird orientation to teach some basic bird care, grooming, good husbandry and training skills. We even make a point to keep in contact with our adopted birds so we are sure they are happy, and healthy and thriving in their new home.

Sometimes we take in birds that cannot or will not be adoptable for one reason or another. When this happens we offer them whatever they need for medical care and behavioral training and then place them in permanent sanctuary where they are safe and loved and appreciated for who they are, and they are given the space to be happy, healthy, well adjusted birds. Sanctuary birds live together as a community and have all the benefits of living in a flock where they are most comfortable for the remainder of their very long lives.

Whenever and wherever people and birds need us we will come, no questions asked and no judgments passed.

WHY WE DO IT:

Well isn’t it obvious, clearly we were dropped on our heads as babies!! Okay then, this poem pretty much says it all.

The Meaning of Rescue
Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage, lest I forget.
There's so much to carry, so much to regret.
Yes, there it is, right on the top,
Let's unpack loneliness, heartache and loss.
And there by my perch hides fear and shame.
As I look on these things I tried hard to leave,
I still have to unpack my baggage called pain.
I loved them, the others, the one's who left me,
But I wasn't good enough, for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage, or help me unpack?
Will you look at my things and take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage, to never repack?
I pray that you do, I'm so tired you see,
but I do come with baggage, will you still want me?
